COACHING STAFF
Head Coach - Rich Rider (1994-Present)
![]() |
Returning as head coach of the California Lutheran University Kingsmen
basketball program, Rich Rider is looking ahead to another promising
campaign. In 2003, Rider guided the Kingsmen to a 16-9 overall record
while placing 2nd in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SCIAC), posting an 10-4 record. Through seven seasons at the helm of the Kingsmen, Rider has amassed a 121-78 record (.621), becoming the fastest of any of the previous nine CLU head coaches to reach the 50-win plateau. He currently ranks third in CLU career coaching victories. |
Rider became the tenth head coach in the history of men's basketball at California Lutheran University,
in an announcement by CLU President Dr. Luther Luedtke on March 16, 1994.
Rider, 55, came to CLU, most recently, from the Boise Unified School District in Idaho where he served
the 1993-94 academic year as athletic director. Prior to that, he was associate men's basketball coach
at Boise State University for nine seasons under head coach Bobby Dye. Rider also spent a tenth
season under Dye when they were at Cal State Bakersfield in 1982-83 as the Roadrunners posted a
25-5 overall record and garnered the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship
and a trip to the "elite eight" of the NCAA Division II Championship.
Dye considers Rider one of the top on-court coaches in the country and has a good effect with the
players, both on the court and off. While at BSU, Rider was in charge of scheduling and recruiting as
the Broncos won three Big Sky Conference titles and earned five NCAA Division I playoff appearances.
Rider was the head coach at then Chapman College (now University) in Orange, California for nine
seasons (1973-74 through 1981-82) and had seven winning campaigns. Rider guided the program to a
136-104 overall record (.567), including a high-water mark of 19-10 for the 1976-77 campaign and a berth
in the NCAA Division II Championships. Rider also posted an 18-9 overall mark in 1980-81.
A winner everywhere he has coached, Rider expects the same at CLU. "I'm thrilled to be at CLU," said
Rider. "I believe in running an up-tempo offense, along with a strong defense," continued Rider. "The fast
break starts with defense. At Boise State, we were ranked in the top ten nationally in scoring defense
and opponents' shooting percentage. When you put those two together, you're doing well."
A three-year starter for the Bulldogs at Northeast Missouri State University (NEMO), Rider has a
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration (1968) and Health (1970) from NEMO, and a Master's
degree in Physical Education (1971) and a Doctoral degree in Physical Education from
the University of
Utah (1973). Following a three-year stint at Utah, Rider began his head-coaching career at Chapman.
While at Chapman, Rider served an interim director of athletics for one year and was chair of the
physical education department.
"I've always enjoyed working at small colleges," continued Rider. "It's a good feeling to be coaching
again. The people here are friendly, and the players are all quality guys."
Rider and his wife, Janie, have three children, Jon, Scott, and Missy. Jon was
a two-year varsity letter-winner for the CLU Kingsmen (1994-95 & 1995-96) and Missy, a 1998 CLU
Graduate, was a three-year letter winner as a member of the CLU Regals basketball team. The Riders
make their home in Thousand Oaks, California.
